Studies have shown that group therapy can be one of the most effective forms of treatment available for various types of emotional disorders. CFCCC believes in the therapeutic healing that takes place during the group process.
CFCCC provides group therapy for children who have experienced sexual abuse. Groups are usually limited to three or four children and include both boys and girls. Each group is delineated by age groups. For example, one group may include 5 to 7 year olds; another may be 12 to 14 year olds. The sessions are quarterly depending on the number and age of children or youth who wish to participate in the group. Each session promotes universality. When the child realizes they are not the only one who has been a victim the abuse it engenders healing. Group activities decrease isolation, shame and distrust which often accompany rape. During sessions the children and youth explore the commonalities of their stories and work to identify the various feelings surrounding their experience of sexual abuse.
During these sessions parents are provided educational information on the effects of abuse, resources for victims of abuse and what behavior you may see in your child as a result of the abuse.
